Last updated November 2026: southern Thailand splits into an Andaman coast and a Gulf coast, and that choice shapes the whole trip. Start with the coast, then pick a base, then check the month. This guide compares both sides, matches bases to traveler types and explains how to move between them from Bangkok.

What Is Southern Thailand? (Quick Answer)

Sponsored

Southern Thailand is the peninsula region south of the Kra Isthmus. It spans 14 provinces, including Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, Songkhla and Yala. Two coasts define it: the Andaman Sea to the west and the Gulf of Thailand to the east. Hat Yai is the largest city and the region's transport hub. Most visitors see only the beach bases, yet the mainland adds Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang and Satun. Position the south among Thailand's main regions before you commit days to it.

  • First-timers: Krabi (Ao Nang and Railay) or Phuket for the easiest flights and boats.
  • Divers: Koh Tao on the Gulf side.
  • Climbers: Railay on the Andaman coast.
  • Quiet beach time: Khao Lak.
  • Jungle and lake stays: Khao Sok National Park.
  • Food and temples without island crowds: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang and Hat Yai.

Andaman Coast vs Gulf Coast: Which Should You Choose?

Choose the coast before the island, because the two sides differ in sea, season and access. The Andaman side has Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Khao Lak. The Gulf side has Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Treat the table as a planning screen and verify seasonal claims before booking.

Each base below carries a time band, a best fit and one trade-off. Time bands are our editorial assessment, not official figures. Khao Sok adds the biggest natural contrast: Cheow Lan reservoir covers 165 km² inside the park, per Wikipedia. Near Krabi, the Emerald Pool (Sra Morakot) sits about a 30-minute hike through Khao Nor Juji forest, according to one tour operator.

  • Phuket: 2 to 4 days; first-timers and families; trade-off is traffic and busy beach strips.
  • Krabi, Ao Nang and Railay: 3 to 5 days; climbers, couples and food lovers; trade-off is boat-dependent beaches.
  • Khao Lak: 2 to 4 days; quieter beach stays; trade-off is fewer nightlife options.
  • Phi Phi: 1 to 2 nights; snorkeling and viewpoints; trade-off is day-trip crowds, so go early or late.
  • Khao Sok: 2 nights; floating bungalows and jungle; trade-off is a slower, wetter itinerary.
  • Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao: 4 to 7 days; divers and beach hoppers; trade-off is ferry planning.
  • Nakhon Si Thammarat: 1 to 2 days; temples and history; trade-off is little beach time.
  • Hat Yai and Songkhla: 1 to 2 days; transit and street food; trade-off is no postcard beaches.
  • Trang and Satun (Tarutao): 3 to 5 days; quiet islands; trade-off is longer transfers.

Best Time To Visit Southern Thailand By Coast

Rain seasons differ by coast, so a good month on one side can be a poor month on the other. Verify month ranges on the Thai Meteorological Department site before booking. TMD forecasts the Gulf side as a southern east-coast region that also includes Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phetchaburi. One Andaman-focused operator describes July to October as humid, with short, intense bursts of rain. Another reports that December to February departures fill fast, including Bottle Beach on Koh Phangan. Treat those as booking signals, not forecasts. Ferry service can thin out in rough-sea months, so confirm current schedules.

How Many Days You Need In Southern Thailand

Sponsored

Operator packages run from 5 to 18 days, but a self-planned route can be shorter and looser. Stick to one coast on a short trip, since every coast change costs real transit time. Pair the south with the north only if you can give each side its own block, and compare northern routes around Chiang Mai first.

  • Short Andaman, about 5 days: Phuket or Krabi, with one boat day to Phang Nga Bay.
  • Island hopping, 8 to 10 days: Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Ao Nang and Railay.
  • Khao Sok plus both coasts, 12 days or more: Khao Sok as the hinge, then Andaman and Gulf bases.
  • Longer overland south, 2 weeks or more: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Hat Yai, Trang and Satun.

Getting There And Around

Bangkok connects to the south by rail and highway, and regional airports serve the larger towns. Phetkasem Road runs from Bangkok toward the south. Asian Highway 2 runs mostly parallel to the railway. The southern line reaches Hat Yai and continues to Sungai Kolok, so check timetables on the State Railway of Thailand site. Wikipedia counted five international airports in the south as of 2018, including Phuket, Krabi, Hat Yai and Samui. Confirm the current list with the airport operator. Khao Sok works as a hinge between coasts, and one operator route runs Bangkok, Surat Thani, Khao Sok, Krabi, then Ko Phi Phi.

Tip

Using Khao Sok as a hinge between coasts only suits trips of 12 days or more, so shorter trips should stay on one side.

Costs And Budget Levels

Cost depends on island versus mainland, high versus low season and tour add-ons. Check current ferry, park and rail prices with the official operators, because this guide has no sourced baht figures.

  • Backpacker: mainland bases, buses and shared boats.
  • Mid-range: island bases, flights and a few paid day trips.
  • Higher-end: beachfront stays, private boats and peak-season dates.

Wildlife, Nature And Responsible Choices

Ethical elephant venues share three traits: observation only, no riding and no shows. One operator reports herds of up to 40 wild elephants at Kui Buri. On Koh Lanta, a tour operator describes Following Giants as observation-only, so verify its current policy before booking. Khao Sok, the mangroves around Phang Nga Bay and Khao Lak reward slow paddling over fast boat loops. Park fees and closures change, so confirm them with the national park authority before you go.

Good to know

Phi Phi's 1 to 2 nights pair well with early departures, which dodge the midday crowds on boat tours.

  • Ask whether visitors may ride, bathe or feed elephants.
  • Skip any venue that stages shows.
  • Choose small-boat or canoe tours over crowded speedboat circuits.
  • Book early departures at Phi Phi to avoid midday crowds.

Culture, Food And Local Context

Southern Thai is the main local language, and Pattani Malay is also spoken, per Wikipedia. Muslim communities are concentrated near the Malaysian border, so verify local customs before visiting. Krabi's street food includes roti and curries with Malay influence, dry-fry curries and grilled squid skewers. Remove shoes at Buddhist sites and cover shoulders and legs at temples. Inland, Isan's inland contrast shows a very different food culture. Northern Lanna heritage and customs add another cultural thread.

Safety, Entry And Practical Notes

Sponsored

One operator says foreigners entering Thailand since May 1, 2025 must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival. Confirm that rule on the official Thai immigration site. Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala are among the 14 provinces. Read your foreign ministry's current advisory before visiting them. On the water, ask operators about sea conditions and lifejackets before boarding.

  • Booking an island ferry with a tight flight connection.
  • Overpacking the route with a new base every night.
  • Picking the wrong coast for your travel month.
  • Joining animal attractions that offer rides or shows.
  • Boarding overcrowded boat tours.
