Last updated November 2026: getting around Hat Yai works best with a ride-hailing app or a fare agreed up front, plus a booked return for any sight outside town. This guide covers arrivals, city rides, out-of-town sights and onward trips. Costs are marked as reports or "confirm locally" wherever our sources do not verify them.

Quick answer: how to get around Hat Yai

Use a ride-hailing app such as Grab for most city trips. One traveler reported that Grab bikes and cars worked in Hat Yai, but treat that as a single account. Walk for short hops inside the center. For sights 7 km to 10 km out, arrange the ride back before you leave. Confirm every fare on the day, because no verified fare table exists for this page. Our Hat Yai things to do guide shows which sights are worth the trip.

Getting from the airport and stations into town

Verified airport fares and journey times are not available for this guide, so confirm a fixed fare before you get in any vehicle. Our Hat Yai airport guide covers the arrival side. Train passengers should check timetables for Hat Yai Junction with State Railway of Thailand. Long-distance options are in our Bangkok to Hat Yai: Train, Bus or Flight Compared page.

Getting around the city center

Songthaew shared pickups, tuk-tuks, metered taxis and motorbike taxis are the local options named in our notes. We have no verified price for any of them. Agree the fare before you board, or insist on the meter in a taxi. One traveler described the city as easy to stroll, with markets and malls close together. Check a map before you commit to walking in midday heat. Picking a base near the places you want makes walking realistic, and our where to stay guide helps with that. Rain also changes the choice, so see the best time to visit page and the Thai Meteorological Department forecast.

Reaching sights outside the center

Out-of-town sights need a return plan before you leave town. One traveler reported Hat Yai Municipal Park at about 7 km from their hotel. A short hill ride there was reported at ฿15, and the cable car was not running on that visit. Check current status before you go. The Central Mosque of Songkhla Province sits about 10 km from the center on the highway toward Songkhla City. The same traveler found no Grab ride back and waited about 2 hours before walking to a nearby junction to get a pickup. That is one account, not a rule, but it shows why a waiting driver is cheap insurance. Khlong Hae is covered in our floating market guide.

Good to know

At about 10 km from the center, the Central Mosque falls in the 7 km to 10 km band where a return ride should be booked first.

  • Hat Yai Municipal Park: ride-hailing out, hill ride at the park, ask the driver for a phone number for the way back.
  • Central Mosque of Songkhla Province: ask your driver to wait, or agree a round-trip fare.
  • Khlong Hae floating market: confirm the ride back before you arrive, especially late in the day.

Evening and night logistics

Plan the ride home before you head to the market. Our Hat Yai night market guide covers where to go. For later plans, see nightlife and evening options. Ride-hailing apps show you a fare before you commit. For street rides, agree the price first. We have no verified source on late-night availability or safety, so keep a backup option and ask your hotel what is usual.

Onward travel and day trips

Hat Yai is a transit point. One traveler noted minibus and ferry links toward Khao Sok and Koh Samui, and onward routes toward Krabi and Phuket. Booking.com lists a minivan and Satun to Pak Bara speed boat package toward Koh Lipe, plus a private van from the airport to Pak Bara Pier. We have no verified schedule or price, so confirm routes and booking channels directly. Songkhla City lies along the same highway as the mosque. Penang is about 4 hours by car, according to one traveler.

Best way to get around by traveler type

Match the mode to your trip.

  • First-timer: ride-hailing and walking, with a fare agreed before any street ride.
  • Family: a metered taxi or booked car with luggage space.
  • Budget: songthaews and walking, once you have confirmed the route locally.
  • Malaysian weekend visitor: a rental car if you plan several out-of-town stops, otherwise ride-hailing.
  • Transit traveler: pre-book the van or boat leg and keep slack for delays.

Mistakes to avoid

Skipping a return ride to a remote sight is the biggest error, since apps may not find a driver there. Do not carry only large notes, because small bills make fare haggling easier. Never start a street ride without agreeing the fare. Once your transport is sorted, our Is Hat Yai Worth Visiting? Who Should Go (and Skip) page helps you decide how much time to give the city.

Tip

One traveler waited about 2 hours for a pickup after finding no ride back, so settle the return before you leave.
