Last updated November 2026. Hat Yai Airport (HDY) sits in Songkhla province and is run by Airports of Thailand. This guide covers the transfer into town, the terminal layout, arrival times and what to do if you have hours to fill. Every fare and time below is a reported range, so confirm it on the day.

HDY is the IATA code for Hat Yai International Airport. One passenger terminal handles both domestic and international flights, according to a competitor guide based on airport information. Sources disagree on the distance to the city. One puts it at about 15 km southwest, and your trip planning notes say about 10 km. Plan on 20 to 30 minutes by road in normal traffic. You cannot walk to the center, so you need a vehicle on either end of your flight. Airports of Thailand publishes the official contact page at hatyai.airportthai.co.th. Check it for phone numbers and any facility changes before you travel.

  • Code: HDY (ICAO VTSS, as reported)
  • Operator: Airports of Thailand
  • Terminal: one building, domestic and international
  • Road time to the center: about 20 to 30 minutes (reported)

Getting Between Hat Yai Airport and the City

Six options exist, and the fares below are reported ranges from an undated source. Confirm each one at the arrivals counters. Songthaew vans are the cheapest option, at about ฿30 to ฿40 per person. A metered taxi is reported at about ฿250 to ฿300 for the same trip. Ask the driver to switch on the meter, or agree a price before you get in. Never treat a tout's quote as the fare. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab show a price up front, which avoids arguments. For onward local movement once you are in town, see our guide to getting around Hat Yai.

Inside the Terminal: Levels, Check-In and Security

A traveler post based on Airports of Thailand information describes two levels. Level 1 holds check-in counters, Common Use Self-Service kiosks, arrivals and baggage claim. Level 2 holds the departure hall, security, gates and, for international flights, immigration. Terminal entrance doors are not boarding gates. Counter and gate numbers change by flight, so read the flight screens when you arrive. Airline office rooms listed in the airport directory are not the same as check-in counters. Treat this layout as a guide and verify it on the day, because renovation plans may change it.

How Early to Arrive at Hat Yai Airport

Sources suggest 1.5 to 2 hours before domestic flights and 2 to 3 hours before international ones. One guide gives 2.5 to 3 hours for international flights in a second place, so the sources conflict. Follow your airline's own check-in cutoff above any blog figure. Take the longer end of the range in three cases. Those are peak season, early-morning departures and bag drop with a low-cost carrier. Our guide to the Best Time to Visit Hat Yai: Month-by-Month Guide shows when crowds are likely. If you connect from a train, check timetables with the State Railway of Thailand and leave a buffer. Avoid tight same-day connections between a bus, train or minivan and a flight.

Tip

Count the 20 to 30 minute road trip from town against the 1.5 to 2 hours you need before a domestic flight.

  • Domestic: 1.5 to 2 hours (reported)
  • International: 2 to 3 hours (reported; one source says 2.5 to 3)
  • Peak season or early flight: use the longer figure

Airlines and Routes

Bangkok Post reported in September 2025 that nine airlines link Hat Yai with domestic points. It named Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Udon Thani and Betong. It also named Kuala Lumpur and Singapore as international links. A Trip.com post lists airline offices or service providers for Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Batik Air, Bangkok Airways, Thai Lion Air, Thai Airways, Scoot and Thai Vietjet Air. That list may not match current flights. Routes change, so confirm on the airport page and your airline's site. For the main domestic route, read our Bangkok to Hat Yai guide. Bangkok Post also reported 19,010 flights from October 2024 to July 2025. That figure answers the busy question: 2,522 were international and 16,488 were domestic.

Food and Facilities

A competitor guide says landside has the main choice of restaurants and the airside area is more limited. Eat before security if you have time. It reports halal and vegetarian options, and Gai Tod Hat Yai fried chicken as a local dish to try. Reported facilities include ATMs, currency exchange, Wi-Fi, mother-and-child rooms and step-free access. None of this is confirmed from an official source here, so check the airport page. Long Layover or Early Arrival: What to Do

Leaving the airport costs roughly 20 to 30 minutes each way, plus re-entry and security. As editorial guidance, not a sourced rule, stay airside if you have under about 4 hours. With 4 hours or more, a city trip becomes realistic. By day, try the Khlong Hae floating market. After dark, the Hat Yai Night Market Guide: Where to Eat, Shop and Go is an option. Plan the overland leg separately, because no official border details are supplied here.

Where to Stay for an Early or Late Flight

A competitor guide says several hotels sit close to the airport and offer transfers. A hotel named The Signature Hotel Airport Hat Yai appears in Trip.com listings. Verify its location and shuttle terms before booking. For a wider choice by area, see Where to Stay in Hat Yai: 5 Best Areas by Trip Type.

Upgrades and Changes to Watch

Sponsored

Bangkok Post reported plans over 1 to 2 years to renovate the second-floor departure hall, upgrade restrooms and improve access roads. A 3 to 5 year plan includes new passenger terminals, more parking, a six-lane access road and boarding bridges. Do not assume any of it is finished. Layout descriptions, including those above, may be out of date. Self-service check-in and identity verification systems were also reported as introduced.

Good to know

Level 2 holds security, gates and the departure hall, and Bangkok Post reported renovation plans over 1 to 2 years.

Common Mistakes at Hat Yai Airport

Sponsored

Most problems come from rushing. Avoid these.

  • Accepting a taxi tout's quote instead of the meter or an app price
  • Mistaking a terminal entrance door for the boarding gate
  • Leaving your meal until after security
  • Booking a tight same-day bus or train connection to a flight
  • Trusting one blog's flight-time figure over your airline's cutoff
