Last updated November 2026: the Hat Yai floating market most travelers mean is Khlong Hae Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองแห), a canal market built for visitors. Sources report it open Friday to Sunday from 3pm to 9pm, with free entry and about 2 hours needed. Weekday plans will fail, so confirm current hours and pair it with our other Hat Yai attractions.

Is the Hat Yai Floating Market Worth It?

Khlong Hae is a staged tourist market, not a dawn trading market. Boats stay moored along a walkway instead of drifting, so do not expect Bangkok-style movement on the water. A 2017 Travelfish review calls it "a little cheesy" but enjoyable for the food and atmosphere. One 2024 blogger counted about 50 boat stalls and at least 50 more food stalls on land. Travelfish places it in Hat Yai's quiet northern outskirts, so it works as a single evening outing. For the bigger picture, read whether the city is worth a stop. Use this quick filter before committing.

  • Go: food-focused travelers who can be there Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
  • Go: groups who want spacious seating beside the canal.
  • Go: photographers happy with moored boats and a canal-side walkway.
  • Skip: weekday-only stays, since sources report weekend opening only.
  • Skip: short layovers with no driver or ride booked for the return.
  • Skip: anyone expecting a market of moving boats.

Opening Hours and Best Time to Go

Two sources report Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 3pm to 9pm. A third, a templated Agoda guide, suggests weekdays are quieter. That advice conflicts with the weekend-only reports, so treat Friday to Sunday as the working rule. Check the market's current social page or a map listing before you leave. Hours on holidays or in the rainy season are unverified. Look at the Thai Meteorological Department forecast on the day, because the stalls are outdoors. For seasonal patterns, see our guide to climate by month. Arriving near 3pm gives daylight for photos. Exact crowd peaks are not sourced, so no timing here is guaranteed.

Tip

Opening runs 3pm to 9pm, so a 2-hour visit still fits if you arrive late in the window.

How to Get to Khlong Hae Floating Market

Khlong Hae sits across the canal from Wat Khlong Hae and is signposted off Route 414. Travelfish measured it at about 6 km north of the train station in 2017. That is a short drive, not a walk. Travelers arriving by rail can check timetables with the State Railway of Thailand. Flying in? Start with our notes on arrival from the airport. Overland travelers can read about the trip from Bangkok and time arrival for a Friday evening. Fares in the table below are dated or unverified, so confirm them before you ride. Agree on a waiting driver before you leave town. Stalls close at 9pm and the outskirts are quiet afterward, so a ride home is not guaranteed. Our page on local taxi and tuk-tuk tips covers fares and apps.

Vendors are reported to be mostly Muslim, and the food is reported to be halal. Halal status is unverified, so ask at any stall where it matters to you. Visitors who expect pork or alcohol should plan on finding neither. Reported dishes come from a 2024 blog and a 2017 review. Stalls also sell trinkets and souvenirs. For more local dishes, see our guide to Southern Thai dishes. If you want a proper meal instead, try sit-down restaurants in town.

  • Otak-otak: steamed fish paste with coconut milk, served in bamboo.
  • Thai dim sum, described as handmade with plenty of varieties.
  • Seafood omelette, reportedly cooked to order on the boat.
  • Grilled prawns and fried noodle stalls.
  • Khanom jeeb (steamed dumplings) and ba-bin (mini coconut pancakes).
  • Luk chup, other Thai sweets and khanom beuang.

How Ordering Works at the Boat Stalls

Boat vendors cook once you order. They place the food in a small basket and extend it on a long pole. Take the food out, then put your payment into the same basket. Without Thai, point at the dish and show fingers for quantity. Land stalls in the covered section sell similar food, plus clothes and souvenirs. Seating is spacious, so carry your food to a table by the canal. A short roadside strip adds about 30 more stalls. Music comes from an on-site stage.

Costs and Cash

Travelfish listed admission as free in 2017. It also reported that most items cost just ฿20. That figure is dated, so expect prices to differ in 2026. Five snacks at ฿20 would come to ฿100 on paper, but treat that as a floor. Bring small notes, because the basket system works best with exact change. Card acceptance is unverified, and one guide says most vendors do not take cards. Parking cost is unverified. Check it with your driver or the market's current page.

Good to know

Where most items cost just ฿20, boat stalls run on a basket system, so small notes keep every purchase moving.

Sample 2-Hour Route and What to Pair It With

Allow about 2 hours, as the 2024 blogger suggested. Arrive close to 3pm for daylight, or later for the evening mood. Wat Khlong Hae lies across the canal, so a short look at the temple fits before you eat. Our guide to temple visits covers the wider options. Khlong Hae is a canal market on the outskirts, while the city's evening markets sit in town. Compare it with the city's night stalls if you have only one evening. For a full night out, see after-dark options.

  • Minutes 0–20: walk the moored boats and the canal walkway.
  • Minutes 20–70: order from a boat stall and eat at the seating.
  • Minutes 70–95: browse the covered land stalls.
  • Minutes 95–120: catch the stage, then try the roadside strip.
  • By 9pm: meet your driver for the ride back.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from timing and transport. A Monday to Thursday arrival finds the market closed, going by sources that say 3pm to 9pm on Friday to Sunday only. Skipping a return ride leaves you on a quiet road near 9pm. Arriving without small baht notes slows every purchase. Expecting moving boats leads to disappointment.

  • Arriving on a weekday.
  • Leaving without a booked or waiting return ride.
  • Carrying only large notes or relying on cards.
  • Skipping a check of current hours.
  • Expecting Damnoen Saduak-style moving boats.

Where to Stay for a Market Trip

Sponsored

Khlong Hae is about 6 km from the train station, so any central base works with a taxi. Pick a hotel that can arrange a return pickup after 9pm. Compare neighborhoods to base in before booking.
