Last updated November 2026. Is Koh Yao Noi worth visiting? It is if you want a quiet, rural island with Phang Nga Bay views, and less so if you want nightlife or big beach resorts.
Is Koh Yao Noi Worth Visiting? The Short Answer
Our verdict: yes, with conditions. Koh Yao Noi rewards travelers who want quiet roads, paddy-field villages, kayaking and limestone views across Phang Nga Bay. Skip it, or shorten the stay, if you want powdery white sand, nightlife or big-ticket sights. Long boat transfers also make a 1–2 day schedule feel thin. Competitor guides agree the island is low-key and activity-led. They split on how touristy it is, so we would not promise empty beaches. Expect some tourist infrastructure and few crowds.
- Go: quiet village life, cycling, kayaking and Phang Nga Bay views.
- Maybe: families and couples who want calm but can live with tidal, non-postcard beaches.
- Skip: nightlife seekers, white-sand hunters and anyone with only one rushed day.
Who Will Love Koh Yao Noi, and Who Should Skip It
Your answer depends on what you want from an island. Treat this table as our editorial assessment, not a score. Suggested nights already allow for boat transfers.
| Traveler | Verdict | Why | Suggested nights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow travelers and cyclists | Go | Rural roads, village tours, unhurried pace | 3 or more |
| Couples wanting quiet | Go | Phang Nga Bay views, quiet beaches, luxury resorts such as Six Senses Yao Noi | 2–3 |
| Climbers and kayakers | Go | Kayak to Ko Nok, climbing spots in the north | 2–3 |
| Families | Maybe | Calm pace, but tidal beaches and scooter roads need care | 2 |
| Phuket or Krabi day-trippers | Maybe | Boat transfers eat the day; check the last boat | Day trip or 1 |
| Nightlife and white-sand seekers | Skip | Few bars, tidal beaches that are not powdery | 0 |
Koh Yao Noi vs Koh Yao Yai, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta
Koh Yao Yai is the closest comparison. One competitor puts it at 90 square kilometers (about 35 square miles), against roughly 50 (about 19 square miles) for Koh Yao Noi. Competitors call Yai less developed and quieter. They say Noi has more amenities, organized tours and better ferry services. Phuket brings the crowds and party beaches that Koh Yao Noi avoids. Koh Jum is another alternative one competitor guide covers.
Yai spans 90 square kilometers against Noi's roughly 50, yet one guide says walking Noi east to west takes the best part of an hour.

| Island | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Koh Yao Noi | Quiet village life, tours, kayaking | Tidal, non-powdery beaches; little nightlife |
| Koh Yao Yai | Even quieter, more local feel (per competitors) | Larger, less developed, fewer amenities |
| Phuket | Nightlife, big resorts, choice | Crowded roads and party beaches |
| Krabi, Ao Nang and Railay | Climbing hotspots and boats to Koh Yao Noi | A mainland base, not a quiet island stay |
| Koh Lanta | Seasonal direct boat to Koh Yao Noi (Nov–Apr in one source) | About 4 hours by direct boat; verify |
How Many Days Do You Need? Day Trip vs 1, 2 and 3+ Nights
Guides disagree on timing. Some frame the island as an easy day trip, others as an overnight stop. Speedboats from Phuket take about 30 minutes each way. Add the taxi to Bang Rong Pier, plus a wait for the next departure. Last boats leave around 5 PM, so a day trip leaves little margin. We'd book one night as the minimum and two or three as the sweet spot.
| Stay | What it realistically allows | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| Day trip | One activity, such as a scooter loop or the Ko Nok kayak | Possible, but tight against the roughly 5 PM last boat |
| 1 night | A scooter loop, one meal out, a sunrise or sunset | Minimum we suggest |
| 2–3 nights | Hong Islands tour, village tour, kayak, a slow day | Sweet spot for most |
| 4+ nights | Climbing, yoga, slow cycling, rest days | For slow travelers |
What You Actually Do There
Activity is the main draw here. Our Koh Yao Noi activities guide has the full list. These are the picks we would build a stay around. For a bigger outing, the four-island Hong Islands tour in Than Bok Khorani National Park covers Ka Mit, Pak Bia, Lao Lading and Koh Hong. One competitor reports ฿2,500 in total for a private longtail for four people, lunch included (approximate, verify). Details on Hong Islands and other boat tours sit on a separate page.
Kayaking to Ko Nok is roughly 1 hour out, then a 15-minute rope scramble, which leaves little slack before the 5 PM last boat.
- Cycling: one guide reports averaging 15 km (about 9 miles) a day by bicycle, though some far corners stayed out of reach.
- Kayak to Ko Nok: about ฿200, roughly 1 hour and about 1 mile out, then a strenuous 15-minute rope scramble to the top.
- Village eco tour: a half-day with a batik artist in Tha Khao, a fishing village, a coconut plantation and paddy fields.
- Rock climbing: about 8 spots in the north, according to one guide that did not visit them itself.
- Yoga: Island Yoga drop-ins were ฿300, daily 10:00–11:15 AM, in a 2020 post. Verify before you go.
How to Get to Koh Yao Noi: Quick Version
Phuket is the most common starting point. Boats run from Bang Rong Pier to Manoh Pier on Koh Yao Noi. Speedboats take about 30 minutes and cost roughly ฿400–500, with one source saying ฿400. Longtails take 1–1.5 hours at about ฿200–300. First departures run about 7:50–8:40 AM and the last about 5 PM, and sources vary. From Phuket Airport, Bang Rong Pier is about 17 km (11 miles) and a 20–40 minute drive, according to one guide. Fares and timetables conflict between sources, so confirm both on the current ferry timetable. Full route detail lives in our guide to reaching the island by boat. From Bangkok, expect two to three stops: a flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket or Krabi, a taxi, then a boat. Step-by-step options are on the Bangkok route page.

- Krabi side: Nopparat Thara Pier speedboats take about 30 minutes at ฿650 in one guide, while another quotes ฿200–300 from Tha Lane Pier. These conflict, so check.
- Koh Yao Yai hop: roughly ฿100–150, 10 minutes or more, with infrequent departures.
- Phi Phi direct: about 2 hours 45 minutes, roughly ฿1,200, twice daily in one source.
- Koh Lanta direct: seasonal, about 4 hours, ฿1,200–1,500 in one source.
Costs: Is Koh Yao Noi Expensive?
Is Koh Yao Noi expensive? Affordable is the word one competitor uses, citing cheap restaurants and rentals. Another says island food costs slightly more than on the mainland. Beachfront rooms cost more than inland ones. Boats and tours are the big line items. Room rates are not supplied by our sources, so check them directly before budgeting. All figures below are approximate, so verify before you go.

| Item | Approximate price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Phuket speedboat | ฿400–500 | About 30 minutes |
| Phuket longtail | ฿200–300 | 1–1.5 hours |
| Krabi speedboat, Nopparat Thara Pier | ฿650 | Other sources quote less; confirm |
| Tuk-tuk from Manoh Pier | ฿100 per person | About 5 km (3 miles) to one resort |
| Scooter rental | ฿200–250 per day | Fuel about ฿80–150 per tank |
| Kayak to Ko Nok | ฿200 | About 1 hour out |

| Yoga drop-in | ฿300 | From a 2020 post |
When to Go, Tides and Season Trade-Offs
Competitors place the dry season at November to April, with one narrowing the best weather to November–March. That window is also peak season, so boats and rooms fill faster. May to October is low season, with rain, rough seas and some closed hotels, restaurants and bars. Rough seas can also cut snorkeling visibility. Check seasonal outlooks at the Thai Meteorological Department. Tides matter too. At low tide, one guide says you can walk a sandbar to Ko Nok from the Stella restaurant area, so verify local conditions. Month-by-month detail sits on our page about the best months to go.
Getting Around and Where to Base Yourself
Koh Yao Noi covers about 50 square kilometers (roughly 19 square miles). Walking from east to west takes the best part of an hour, one guide says. Most visitors therefore rent wheels. Scooters run about ฿200–250 per day, and taxis need pre-booking because they are hard to flag down. Cyclists get a slower, quieter ride. Compare the two on our scooter versus bicycle page. Manoh Pier sits in the southwest, with tuk-tuks and songthaews waiting for arrivals. For a base, one guide prefers the southeast, with beaches, restaurants and bars within walking distance. East-coast stays also catch the sunrise. Another guide stayed at Connexion Hostel in the middle of the island. Six Senses Yao Noi and Cape Kudu Hotel are the luxury names both guides mention.
Honest Downsides and Mistakes to Avoid
Beaches are the first letdown for some visitors. Competitors describe them as tidal and not powdery white, though quiet. Klong Jark Beach faces east and was nearly deserted for one guide. Compare spots on our page about the tidal beaches. After dark, options are limited. Sea Gypsy offers low-key music, according to one guide, yet another found it closed. Our notes on after-dark options set expectations. We could not verify the night market is running, so check current status. Alcohol is limited by the large Muslim population, per one competitor, so verify before relying on beach bars. Scooter roads vary, with potholes, speed bumps and dirt tracks. Mankei Bay is the cautionary case, where one rider gave up after 20 minutes on dirt and narrow concrete paths. Restaurant hours conflict across sources, so confirm before walking over. Our restaurant picks flag this.
- Missing the last boat, around 5 PM in most sources.
- Riding a scooter to Mankei Bay without experience; always wear a helmet and check license and insurance rules locally.
- Planning a low-season trip (May–October) around open restaurants and calm seas.
- Expecting white sand or nightlife.
